This picture was taken on a train in Soviet Union by an anonymous photographer, according to Tarski. It was used in the Tarski room of the University of California at Berkeley. The picture appeared in the frontispiece of Tarski's Collected Papers edited by Steven R. Givant and Ralph N. McKenzie (Birkhäuser, Basel-Boston-Stuttgart, 1986), as well as in the paper "A Portrait of Alfred Tarski", by Steven Givant (The Mathematical Intelligencer, 13/3, 1991, pp. 16-32). The copies were made from the original prints that Tarski had in his possession. Since then the picture has received fairly wide distribution.
Tarski loved this picture.

(Thanks to Steve Givant and Jan Wolenski for this information.)
